Border Footbridges Sit Unguarded
A $2.4 billion dollar border fence in Hudspeth County Texas and metal footbridges on either side of it unguarded. The bridges were built in the 1930's as part of a treaty with Mexico.
A spokeswoman for the International Boundary and Water Commission says
'technically speaking', those are grade control structures and NOT bridges. Governor Perry met with Rio Grande Valley police chiefs yesterday and said news of the unsecured footbridges did NOT surprise him.
The executive director of the Texas Border Sheriff's Coalition--Don Ray, wonders why the bridges aren't removed. Drug cartel fighters have overrun small towns east of Juarez. A Border Patrol Special Operations supervisor says agents pay close attention to the bridges, with sensors to alert them to traffic.
The Boundary Commission says it's willing to work on security but no one's ever asked them to secure or remove them.
