Bill To Reform Railroad Commission Derailed

AUSTIN (AP) - A plan to rename the Railroad Commission of Texas has been derailed -- for now.

A procedural challenge halted debate on the proposal changing the name of the agency to the more apt Texas Oil and Gas Commission.

The challenge stemmed from a mistake made on the minutes from a committee hearing.

The plan will have to go back through the committee process to be reconsidered.

The name change is part of a recommendation from an oversight panel's review, but it was one of the few recommendations that made it into the House legislation being debated Thursday.

The Railroad Commission oversees the oil and gas industry in Texas, including more than 350,000 miles of pipeline. It has long been a stepping stone for politicians with aspirations of seeking higher office.
