Big 12 Brings Campus Violence Issue To Dallas

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - The Big 12 Conference today went on the offense about rising concerns regarding college sex assaults involving athletes.
It addressed the losing record in campus sex violence at a forum held at the Belo Mansion.
"We need to have young people understand they are responsible for their actions. And when these things happen, the perpetrator is responsible," said Big 12 Commissioner, Bob Bowlsby.
Although athletes aren't the only men accused of the crime, recent incidents highlight the troubling intersection of college athletics and sexual assault.
"Until authorities take it seriously, it will continue to happen," said executive director of The Family Place, Paige Flink.
Flink applauded today's effort to speak out loud about what many call the 'quiet crime' of campus sex violence.
"I think it's awesome. They didn't realize how rampant it was… it doesn't always come to the surface," she said.
Both TCU and Baylor are examples of universities with football programs sacked by a blitz of embarrassing claims of sex assaults and violence.
And both were in need of today's forum focused on college athletes and the high profile attention they bring to a university.
