Big Cracks, Small Puppy, Huge Save In Garland

GARLAND (CBSDFW.COM) - A one-month-old puppy in Garland is already learning how dangerous this big world can be.
Walking in the backyard of a Garland home Thursday morning, he stumbled into a crack in the earth several feet deep. "Whining like a baby," said Fredricka Simon, who says she found her son's new pet by following the sound of his cries.
Simon called 911, and Garland Animal Service employees came to the rescue, but they soon realized getting the little dog out would be a challenge.
"It was rock hard dirt," said Justin Craft, one of the rescuers. "It was hard to dig through." The drought has left the ground at Simon's house dry and rugged. "There's cracks everywhere," she said. Many are several inches wide, several feet deep.
Rescuers used their bare hands to clear the dirt, reaching down with the entire length of their arms. The puppy, though, remained wedged in the ground, with only his head visible. As he cried, so did 10-year-old Ketrick Sanders, who just one day earlier had convinced his mother to let him keep the puppy. "He was like 'please don't let my puppy die. Please, please,'" said Simon.
Using a water hose to wet the ground, city workers finally slipped the puppy free. "Tears were just rolling," said Simon. "I was just crying, just muddied up."
The puppy still doesn't have a name, but at least he knows he has a family, looking out for him.
