Best Weekend Getaways In The DFW Area

Summer is upon us, and for many this means a time to kick back and escape hectic city weeks and narrow our multitasking down to one simple thing -- kicking back and taking in some fresh, country air, sampling some local live music and meals or delving into the backstory of a historic hideaway. Here are a few memorable getaway destinations a pair of hours or less from the metroplex.

Salado is the most eye-catching small town along IH 35 from Dallas to Austin. Set up in view of the highway, Salado is blooming with boutiques, arts, crafts, flavor and pathways to stroll. With historic jewels like the Stagecoach Inn, dozed in by the likes of Jesse James and other notorious passers-through, this town has its own flavor of chic, spice and the experimental stewed together to make a fantastically aesthetic weekend.

Denton can brag about being both city and country at the same time. With the young crowd brought in from UNT, Denton has its own live music scene and is inundated in the arts. Denton is also horse country, with breeders, stables and equine activities that bring in millions of dollars to the community every year. With its historic courthouse acting as a centerpiece for the downtown area, concerts, antique shopping, food and festivities rotate around the square. This is the weekend getaway for those who enjoy a blend of relaxation with some youthful adventure.

Lake Texoma, about an hour and a half northeast of Dallas, proves just how great the outdoors can be. Holding hands with both Texas and Oklahoma, the vistas here combine the wildlife and wild spirits of both states. Not far from a National Wildlife Refuge, Lake Texoma is part of Eisenhower State Park, named after President Dwight D. Eisenhower, whose birthplace is just down the road in Denison, Texas. Eisenhower Birthplace State Historic Site is open to the public, demonstrating that small towns can also produce the cream of the crop.
