Best Tortas In DFW

Tortas are, in short, big greasy Mexican sandwiches. These lunch favorites are created with bolillo bread and just about any fixings you can find in a Mexican restaurant. Most have typical sandwich ingredients like lettuce and tomato, but also Mexican fillings like refried beans, avocado or whatever else the chef finds in the restaurant. Here are some of the best in the city.

There are a few locations around the Metroplex to taste the greasy treats of Torta La Hechizera. Like most of the best torta restaurants, this is a small unassuming place. Orders are taken at the cash register by the door and sandwiches are served in styrofoam dishes to cafeteria-style tables. Sometimes though, good food doesn't need fancy surroundings to make it taste good. The bolillo bread here is extra greasy and the avocado extra creamy. This restaurant's pambazo sandwich, the cousin to a torta, is also delicious and comes packed in between two moist pieces of bread.

Salsa Limon tortas can be found in the original location or at the food truck, a smaller, portable version of the restaurant that is located on West Berry Street and stays open until 3 a.m. Salsa Limon serves Mexico City-style cuisine at cheap prices for plenty of food. These tortas come hot pressed between two slices of bolillo bread with your choice of meat, creamy refried beans, onions, cilantro, cabbage and sour cream. You can also order a breakfast-style torta if looking for a morning meal.

Goghee To Go offers not only Mexican food, but Korean as well. Actually some of the best dishes are a combination of the two, giving this spot its unique flavor. However, Gohgee's tortas are among the most delicious of the menu options. After customers choose their gohgee (meat) with options of beef, chicken, pork or portobello mushroom, it is piled together with creamy fresca, caramelized onions, cabbage or romaine lettuce and dressed with a sesame soy sauce. This combination is then pressed between two slices of toasted bolillo bread. The end result: a delicious Mexican sandwich.

Maybe more on the side of trendy gourmet than authentic Mexican street food, but whatever the origin, Urban Taco's tortas are delicious. With five specialty tortas to choose from, you can't go wrong with any pick. The delightful sandwiches include meats like rotisserie chile-rubbed pork, adobo-spiked braised chicken, orange and peppercorn slow-roasted pork and adobo-marinated steak, and are served with your choice of side or poblano green rice and black beans. One of the freshly-muddled mojitos goes nicely with the spicy cuisine as well. Urban Taco is located in Mockingbird Station, Uptown and there is even an Urban Taco Express in DFW Airport.

It may not be a five-star restaurant, but El Padrino Mexican Grill certainly knows how to make great tortas. There are two locations in Dallas so locals have ample opportunity to get a taste. Order a torta for breakfast with ingredients like eggs and ham, bacon, Mexican sausage or potatoes. If looking for a lunch sandwich, order your torta with chicken, steak, marinated pork, veal, escalope, BBQ meat or tongue. Some of those offerings may seem a bit obscure, but once packed inside delicious bolillo bread and topped with fresh ingredients, the tortas can taste quite wonderful.
