Best Summer Educational Programs For Kids In DFW

There's no reason for kids to be bored this summer with all the classes and camps available. It is learning, but it is also centered around fun. Kids can learn about art or just enjoy physical activities at a recreation center camp. There are many sports camps as well, to get kids involved in physical activities. Just about any subject is available, and there are daily and weekly options. Here are a few that we thought were interesting.

www.dallaszoo.comThe Dallas Zoo has a summer filled with week-long and day educational camps going through August 12. There are classes for Pre-K through high school. Some classes have a waiting list, so early registration is encouraged. There are classes for different age groups, and several themes revolving around the animals are available. Some focus on science, some on the animals, and there are classes that tend towards the arts but still involve the animals at the zoo.

www.dallascenterforphotography.comHere's a week-long class about photography on the low-tech side. Before there was digital, pictures were taken with film. The class is for students in grades 7-12, and will explore how photos were made before our age of digital cameras. It is a hands-on class, students will make sun prints as well as a pinhole camera out of an oatmeal box. They will learn to develop photos using darkroom chemicals.  Prints will be put together and put on display on the last day of the class that runs Monday through Friday starting on July 11.

www.dallasparks.orgDallas Park and Recreation offers a variety of camps designed to get kids disconnected from electronics and become more physically active. Classes are divided into age groups from age five through high school age. Classes promote physical activity as well as teamwork through group activities. There are day camps and week-long camps at 39 locations in the greater Dallas area. Day camps are from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and some have extended hours. Some classes also have field trips.

www.colormeempowered.orgSummer art camps are week-long events, and there are weekend workshops available. The programs are for kids of all ages. There are classes in painting, sculpture, woodworking, graffiti art and other art mediums. Students are encouraged to explore new types of art, and to explore their imaginations a they learn new methods of making art. Camps run through August. There are morning and afternoon classes, with the morning focusing on the medium and afternoon classes focusing on artists. Students may do both.

www.prosportsexperience.comThis camp is for kids age six through 14 and is non-contact football. It is taught by former NFL Dallas Cowboy Players and coaches. Kids can learn the basics of football, running, throwing and catching and some basic skills. It is non-contact, so it is safe for all ages. It is for boys or girls. Camps are available in Addison, Frisco and Richardson.
