Best DFW Shows To See This Fall On A Budget

When it comes to live performances, Dallas offers some of the best. With opera, concerts and ballet, one need not break the bank to view the arts. Here is a list of some of the best shows to see this fall on a budget.

The 2013-2014 Dallas Opera "By Love Transformed" season opens with Bizet's "Carmen." The 1875 classic will be performed by French mezzo-soprano Clementine Margaine in her American debut. An international cast accompanies Margaine including tenors Brandon Jovanovich and Bruno Ribeiro both playing Don Jose. The "By Love Transformed" season continues with "Death and the Powers" by Tod Machover, "Die Tote Stadt" (The Dead City) by Erich Wolfgang Korngold and "The Barber of Seville" by Gioachino Rossini. Tickets start at $19.

The Dallas Opera, in partnership with the Klyde Warren Park, is offering an evening of open-air opera on the lawn. The free simulcast of George Bizet's "Carmen" starts with a "Toreador Song Sing-A-Long" and behind-the-scenes, big-screen backstage interviews prior to opening curtain. This is a perfect introduction to opera and is suitable for children. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets and picnic baskets. Also, food trucks (with beer and wine) will be stationed nearby.

Patio Sessions features local, emerging, independent artists. The musical repertoire varies from string quartets, mariachi and rock and roll bands. You are encouraged to bring children, blankets, picnic baskets and bottles of wine to the free, two-hour outdoor concerts. Food trucks are on site from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Shakespeare Dallas performs staged readings of the Complete Works of William Shakespeare in the intimate setting of Hamon Hall. The benefit of viewing a performance in this 200-seat theater space is that you get to focus on the language without the distraction of sets and costumes. This is perfect for any student wanting to understand Shakespeare and for adults who are now able to appreciate the works without having to worry about earning the grade. Tickets are $10 and free for students with identification.

This year, the TITAS season includes eight dance and two music performances. Four of them are making their Dallas debut. The season starts with the Dallas debut of the Jessica Lang Dance Contemporary Ballet Company. Scrap Arts Music, also having its Dallas debut, is suitable for the family. The use of found materials to make handcrafted musical instruments adds to the eclectic mix of art and music. Motionhouse uses imagery and theatrical settings in its debut. The performance floor is curved which makes for a very interesting visual performance. Shen Wei Dance Arts is an artistic feast for the eyes. It makes its Dallas debut at TITAS as well. Choreographer Shen Wei is best known for the opening ceremony for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Tickets are $20 or less and student tickets are $10.
