Best River Water Sports Near DFW

The DFW area may not be the best choice for whitewater rafting in Texas, but that doesn't mean that there aren't options for anyone who wants to take a tube out and head down the river. The options near the DFW area include great spots for canoeing, tubing and rafting, although these areas are nowhere near as intense as enthusiasts might find elsewhere in the country. Despite this, there are plenty of rivers and creeks around the DFW area to give anyone an enjoyable time. Here is a look at some of the best whitewater rafting options near the DFW area.

There is over 100 miles of river for canoe, kayak and rafting expeditions at the Trinity River in Dallas. This includes wooded and open natural areas for water fun and Trinity River Expeditions supplies all the equipment needed for a day's worth of adventure. They also offer guided trips for $45 per person, although the Trinity River is also open if you want to take your own canoe or kayak out into the water for a day of adventure, fun or relaxation.

Also at the Trinity River, the Dallas Wave offers enthusiasts the chance to kayak down the river for whitewater rafting while also offering lanes for boating. The Dallas Wave also offers competitions and recreational kayak shows as well for those who are interested. The Dallas Wave offers two different boat launches and over two miles on the Trinity Skyline trail. These trails are well mapped and accessible for day trips for all levels of paddling experience.

The Nolan River offers whitewater kayaking, paddling and rafting in Hill county, with the starting location a short drive from Granbury. The stretch for this kayaking trip is six miles long and is classified by the American Whitewater as a class II section. The stretch of the river from South Highway 174 to Adair Spring Park is one of the only paddling sections of the Nolan River. There is also a campground nearby as well as hotels for those wanting to spend more than one day on this whitewater trip in the DFW area.

Just a short drive from Fort Worth, the Brazos River provides whitewater enthusiasts a nice chance to canoe or raft in a little more exciting current than other DFW whitewater rafting areas.The best place to set off from on an afternoon trip is by the Possum Kingdom Lake near the Morris Sheppard Dam. This whitewater rafting journey stretches about 20 miles and the currents change quickly, so this could provide an exciting trip.

When it comes to whitewater rafting in the DFW area, every year presents an amazing experience where a rafting or canoeing trip can end with a great concert. At the Trinity River in Fort Worth, Rockin' the River: Live at the Trinity presents a huge tubing and music series for water fans. This includes concerts, fireworks and the best in whitewater rafting and tubing experiences. The 2015 series includes concerts by bands like Brandon Jenkins, The Dirty River Boys, Cody Canada and the Departed and more. The events kick off in June and stretches into August.
