Horses are part of what makes Texas what it is. Even though Dallas is a huge city, there are plenty of places to experience this piece of Texas. Trail rides are usually one or two hours, and they have different locations around the Dallas/Forth Worth area. Riding lessons are also available. Don't be put off by the name. Horses are well trained and, for the most part, gentle. Horses are chosen to fit the level of the rider. All rides are two hours, and they have a few different trails to choose from. The Walnut Grove trail is the most popular on Lake Grapevine. Most of their rides are on this trail, but they take riders to different areas with dense woods, creeks, meadows, hills and the lake shoreline.

This company also has a lot of rides along Lake Grapevine as well as some along the Walnut Grove Trail. They ride in a lot of wooded areas and try to give people opportunities to see wildlife, such as deer. They are open daily, except Wednesday and Thursday, and start as early as 9 a.m. with one and two hour trail rides available. Trail rides often go into the deep woods, and you are able to ride without having to stay in a line with other riders. They cater to all ages and have birthday parties available as well as summer riding lessons.

One of the least expensive options, and one that is great for beginners, is riding in one of the Texas state parks. Lake Livingston State Park has a 2.25 mile trail along Lake Livingston with a guided ride with horses that are very gentle and easy to ride are available. Children can take these rides as long as they are at least six years old. Reservations are recommended but not required. They also have meal rides, which can include breakfast, lunch or dinner. Reservations are required for meal rides.

If you are a knowledgeable rider and have some ability, this might be just the place for you. They offer a variety of riding areas where you may ride as you please. They do require at least one lesson because they want to make sure people can handle a horse on their own. You may also bring your own horse or your group may use a combination of your own horses and the stables' horses. They have rides of up to six hours, but will try to accommodate any type of ride you would like. They do birthday parties and offer lessons for all skill levels.

Experience a piece of history along with your ride by riding on the original Chisholm Trail. This was the route used by cowboys to drive herds north to the railroads in the heyday of the cowboy and wild west era. Ride along the Trinity River, and still see the Forth Worth skyline. There are 30 minute and one-hour rides. Arena rides are also available. Reservations are not accepted. The trails are open seven days a week from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
