Best Outdoor Art In DFW

Dallas is a great city for being outdoors, even if it gets a little too hot to be comfortable in the summer at times. Art just seem to find its way to where people are, and there is a lot of outdoor art to be found in Dallas. You will find a lot of murals and sculptures off the beaten path here and there, and there are some very well coordinated places to explore outside public art.

www.dma.orgOne of the coolest places to relax is in the heart of downtown, in back of the Dallas Museum of Art. The best part is, it is free and open during normal museum hours. There are several sculptures making up a garden shaded in ancient Oak trees that give a cooling shade even in summer. The garden is surrounded by 12-foot tall concrete walls that are covered in ivy. Sculptures of various shapes and sizes are made of bronze, stone, and wood. There are small pools and water falls, as well as a small cafe by one of the walls.

www.dallasartsdistrict.orgThe Dallas Arts District is the largest contiguous arts district in the nation, taking up 68 acres in the downtown area, off the Woodall Rodgers Freeway.  This large area has restaurants, performing arts as well as visual arts, both inside and out. It is a great walking area, where you can see sculptures of many kinds. There are always several art shows going on at any given time outdoors.

www.facebook.com/Public-Artwalk-DallasThis is a 3.3 mile self guided tour through downtown Dallas, where you may see a whole day's worth of art. There are sculptures of all kinds, many murals as well as memorials and statues. The tour begins at the Nasher Sculpture Center and makes its way through downtown. You may even see some pretty cool non-authorized graffiti.

Amid the sprawling office complex are winding trails through nearby woods, with fountains and small pools that accentuate the works of art. Pick up a guide in the lobby of the Hall Office Park, and enjoy the free self guided tour.

www.deepellumtexas.comDeep Elum is one of Dallas' oldest neighborhoods. It was here that jazz and blues musicians in Texas made a name for themselves. Today it's a very hip, cool area filled with artists and eclectic types. There is a lot of public art, and each September there is a festival called The Artwalk, but you can take the tour anytime you like. There are also a lot of murals painted by local artists.
