Best Farmers Markets Near DFW

Summer is a great time to enjoy fresh fruits and vegetables. Fortunately, there are several places in the Dallas area where farmers from the area sell their produce. There has been a movement in recent years to have only food grown in the area, so you know it is very fresh. Some of the markets become community events with entertainment and prepared food.
Dallas Farmers Market

This is kind of a new place, a revamped older farmers market in the heart of Dallas. There is a large area of local farmers selling their produce, which includes vegetables, fruits, cheese, honey, meat and other locally made or grown food items. There is also a food court that focuses on locally grown food. On their website, you can look up who is there on a given day and what they are selling. They only have local farmers selling things they have grown themselves. It is open Friday through Sunday, 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Saturday mornings, 8 a.m. to noon, you will find a wide variety of freshly grown produce, eggs, cheese, honey and other homemade items. Coppell is a suburb in the northwest corner of Dallas, and some of the farms are very close by. There are also special events. There is a farm to table dinner, made of all locally grown ingredients. Chefs do food preparation demonstrations and there are various themes some weeks.  The market is open weekly through November.

At Edens Organic Garden Center you can get truly organic home grown food. The market is open all day on the first, third and fifth Saturdays of the month from April until December. It also has a community supported agriculture program where you can have fresh vegetables delivered to your home weekly, but you do have to be a member. Most of the vegetables and fruits sold at the weekly market are grown on this farm, but some other local organic farmers also sell there as well. It is in Balch Spings, 15 minutes south of downtown Dallas.

The Denton Community Market is a lot more than just a farmers market with some veggies being sold. That happens every Saturday, April through the growing season, usually November. It is a community event, with a lot of activities for the entire community. In addition to locally grown or made food, there are food trucks, live music, local artists selling their wares and even free yoga classes. Beginning in 2016 there will be a dog park.

For something really different, try Ruibals Farmers Market. It is a combination of a farmers market,flea market, flower shop and plant store. This location has a daily farmers market at this location, featuring locally grown vegetables. The Ruibal family have one of the largest nursery operations in the Dallas area, and there are always thousands of plants and flowers available at their market. Meat, honey and many other locally made or produced items are also available. This is one of the few in the downtown Dallas area.
