Best BLTs In DFW

In case you weren't aware, April is National BLT Month, which gives you a good reason to indulge in America's second favorite sandwich (ham being the first) all month long. For purists, the classic combination of salty, cured pork, crisp lettuce and juicy tomatoes on sliced bread leaves little room for improvement. But these DFW restaurants aim to change that opinion by taking the humble BLT and elevating it into something truly extraordinary.

Hattie's
418 N. Bishop Ave.
Dallas, TX 75208
(214) 942-7400
hatties.com

No place serves up lowcountry comfort food better than this beloved Bishop Arts eatery, and its southern twist on the classic BLT doesn't disappoint. Hattie's version marries crispy cornmeal-coated tomatoes with applewood smoked bacon, iceberg lettuce and smoked pimento cheese. It's served up on toasted sourdough bread and comes with sweet potato fries on the side.

Uncle Uber's Sammich Shop
2713 Commerce St.
Dallas, TX 75226
(214) 653-8237

The sandwich artists at this shop crank out some of the finest things between sliced bread or, in this case, grilled sourdough, baguettes and buns. Here, you can order up everything from burgers and bahn mi to Cubans and gooey grilled cheese. But if you're craving a BLT, Uncle Uber's goat cheese and bacon sammie is sure to satisfy. It's a flavorful concoction of goat cheese, bacon, tomato, cucumber and avocado on grilled sourdough bread.

The Waffle Wagon
(940) 781-8570
thewwdenton.com

At The Waffle Wagon, owner Rachel Black takes waffles to another level by serving them as sandwiches—and her waffle BLT makes for a magical combination. For this, Black takes a classic waffle, spreads a little Miracle Whip on it and loads it up with crispy lettuce, ripe tomatoes and a generous helping of bacon. She folds it like a sandwich and finishes it off with a dusting of powdered sugar. If you want to kick it up a notch, Black suggests adding a fried egg on top. Just ask for the "Billy Special" it's named after the guy who designed the Waffle Wagon's awesome logo. You can find out where the wagon is rolling through its social media or look for it to be parked at the Austin St. Truck Stop in Denton.

Who needs a sandwich when you can have a BLT on a pizza instead? Actually, Taverna serves both a BLT hand-crafted pizza and a BLT sandwich. The 33 BLT pizza features a cracker crisp crust topped with marinated cherry tomatoes, infused olive oil, basil, arugula, Gorgonzola cheese and locally sourced bacon. Just as terrific is the Rossa BLT sandwich that pairs crispy pancetta with Lemley's tomatoes, arugula and a sunny-side farm egg. Stacked on toasted sourdough and dressed with lemon-garlic aioli, this BLT is definitely a tasty masterpiece.

Brewed
801 W. Magnolia Ave.
Fort Worth, TX 76104
(817) 945-1545

Creative coffees, craft beers and a sophisticated lineup of comfort grub come together beautifully at this eclectic coffee house/gastro pub in Fort Worth's hip near Southside neighborhood. Here, instead of a BLT, Brewed offers a BLTB that comes with Nueske's bacon, burrata cheese, butter lettuce and tomatoes on toasted slices of sourdough bread. Better yet, it's served with a side of duck fat fries. Save room for dessert though, the s'mores in a jar gets rave reviews.
