BCS vs. Playoff

(Dallas-105.3) - One of the great battle cries from the pro college football playoff crowd is, "They decide the championship in every other sports on the field."  My reply is always "Yes, they do, but college football is different."  That is usually where the conversation ends because we are technically both correct.  Today I'd like to take the conversation one step further and explain why college football is different and how a playoff would damage the great game of college football.

FBS College football (division I)  is different because we all care and watch every week, it isn't like FCS football or NCAA basketball.  Nobody watches these sports during the regular season because they know March Madness and the football playoffs are all that matter.  Why care about a mid-winter Texas vs. Texas Tech match-up when if means virtually nothing?

All you have to do is look at the television ratings to see that people are watching college football every Saturday in huge numbers.  College football fans even watch "meaningless" bowl games in large numbers.  Nobody is watching college basketball during the regular season and certainly nobody cares to watch division II football.  March Madness has rendered the regular season in college hoops meaningless.  A division I football playoff would do the same for the regular season of college football.

The college football Athletic Directors and school Presidents know it would be a major payday to have a college football playoff, but they also understand that it would likely have a devastating impact on their regular season television ratings.

A "and one" solution seems to be the only direction that works because it maintains the integrity of the regular season, gives fans a Championship game and provides a huge pay-day for the Universities.
