Baylor Opens First Cancer Hospital In DFW
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Ten thousand people yearly receive cancer treatment from the doctors and staff of Baylor Medical Center Dallas. The main hospital in east Dallas houses specialty treatment centers for trauma, heart health, and other medical conditions. And now, Baylor is operating a full service cancer hospital.
The Baylor Cancer Hospital is now accepting patients. The $125 million facility is the first cancer hospital in North Texas.
The 175,000 square foot facility is located at Baylor University Medical Center's Dallas campus.
The hospital provides inpatient cancer care services, a 24-hour oncology evaluation and treatment center, and support services for patients, their families and caregivers.
A collection of physicians, technicians, nurses and other medical staff will work exclusively on cancer patient treatment and research.
M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston is the only other cancer specialty medical center in Texas.
51-year old Kelly Florie was diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia in 2008. The Kansas native needs a bone marrow transplant. In two days, Florie will get her transplant.
A match was found while Florie was being treated by Baylor. Now her medical treatment is being completed inside the Baylor Cancer Hospital. "I love it here", Florie commented. The rooms are designed for family support and longer patient stays.
"Some spend weeks, up to a month in the hospital", Oncology Director Dr. Alan Miller said. "This area (DFW region) needs a dedicated cancer hospital", Dr. Miller said. The hospital is also connected to the Sammons Cancer Center. The center provides outpatient cancer services. The center and the hospital are fully integrated.
Baylor expects the hospital to be fully operational in November.
