Battle Over Multi-Use Little League Baseball Field At School

DALLAS (CBS 11 NEWS) — What could be a field of dreams in one Lake Highlands neighborhood has turned into a sore point between neighbors who live there and those wanting to build a multi-use ballpark for little leaguers.
The site being explored by the Spring Valley Athletic Association (SVAA) is on the grounds of Lake Highlands Elementary which is part of the Richardson Independent School District.
In a statement to CBS 11 a spokesman for Richardson ISD said in part:
"The school is in initial stages of gathering information, and has yet to make a decision about whether to pursue the idea further."
If the idea were to move forward it would be similar to the kind of partnership SVAA already has with five other RISD schools.
According to SVAA baseball commissioner Wallace Bettes land to develop athletic fields around Lake Highlands is scarce, but the demand is great.
Laura Stead, a homeowner who lives across the street from the Lake Highlands says she doesn't want to see the field go up. She said, "It's not going to benefit those that live on the street, and we're going to have to deal with a lot more traffic and noise."
Bettes responded to those concerns. "We've had no problems with traffic, parking, safety. The way the games are staged we don't have any massive traffic jams," she said about the other five schools who share their fields for league play.
Richardson ISD officials say the idea is still very preliminary and they will hold community meetings as the idea develops into a plan.
