Barking Dog Helps Catch Suspected Copper Thieves

KEMP (CBSDFW.COM) - A barking dog helped send three men to the Kaufman County jail Saturday.

The sheriff's office says on Saturday afternoon a dog belonging to a property owner there was upset about something and let the owner know.

Just then the property owner saw three men running across their land, which is near the town of Kemp.

The property owner called the sheriff's office.  When they got there, deputies say they found a barrel that the suspects had been using to collect copper, brass, and other materials they were trying to steal.

Soon after, a Texas Game Warden caught one of the suspects as he was running through a nearby field.  Kaufman Sheriff's Office deputies caught the other two men, who were hiding in an out building on the property.

34-year-old Richard Mark Steakley of Trinidad and 31-year-old Jesse Garner of Gun Barrel City were both charged with stealing copper and criminal trespass.  They both bonded out of jail.

The third man, 34-year-old Tommy Wayne Jackson of Tool, was also charged with theft of copper and criminal trespass.  He is still in the Kaufman County Jail.
