Barbara Mallory Caraway Files To Run For Congress
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – North Texas Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson (D – Dallas) has knocked aside all opponents vying for the 30th Congressional District seat for three decades.
But now there is someone in her own party ready to take her on.
District 110 State Rep. Barbara Mallory Caraway (D – Dallas) has filed to run for the Congressional seat, which represents 500,000 people.
Caraway is a former Dallas City Council member, and wife of current Dallas councilman Dwaine Caraway.
Caraway was found handing out campaign fliers near her Oak Cliff neighborhood Monday afternoon.
She said her decision to run is rooted in being a voice for residents of the district.
"I'm not running against anyone. I running for the seat," she said, responding to a question about Johnson.
Caraway said she believes constituents are looking for a more responsive leader in the House seat. Johnson has been in the U.S. Congress for 30 years.
Johnson defeated Republican Stephen Broden last year.
Caraway has faced recent controversy, after police were called to her home to respond to a domestic argument call. Her husband claimed she threatened him with a knife. No charges were ever filed.
