Authorities Bring Triple Murder Suspect Back To Texas

LEONARD (CBSDFW.COM) - A Fannin County man accused of killing three of his family members is now back in Texas and locked up in the Fannin County Jail.

Authorities spotted 52-year-old Thomas Lloyd Taunton at an automobile repair shop after his truck broke down in Stonewall, Louisiana. Taunton was talking to a service manager as deputies moved in and made the arrest.

Officials in Fannin County have identified the victims as members of Taunton's family: his father, 73-year-old Harold Harpst; his mother, 79-year-old Sue Harpst; and the couple's daughter, 48-year-old Regina Taunton. Their bodies were all discovered behind a barn on the couple's property, near Leonard.

Taunton waived extradition from Louisiana and, on Monday night, the sheriff and a deputy picked him up in the neighboring state and brought him back to Texas. Authorities have not yet released any details about a possible motive in for the crime.

The Fannin County Sheriff's Department is still looking for a car in this case – a 2007 silver Dodge Caravan with the license plate number 8CPYH – which belonged to the Harpsts. It is equipped with a wheelchair lift on the driver's side and a rack for carrying a wheelchair in the back of the van. If you see that vehicle, you are urged to contact the Fannin County Sheriff's Office.
