At Least 10 Killed In West Texas Prison Bus Crash
PENWELL, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) -- A Texas Department of Criminal Justice bus transporting prisoners from Abilene to El Paso crashed Wednesday morning killing at least 10 passengers.
Two correctional officers and eight offenders have died from their injuries. An additional staff member and four offenders have been transported to the Medical Center in Odessa.
The TDCJ says preliminary information shows that the vehicle left the roadway on I-20 near mile marker 100 and collided with a train around 7:30 a.m.
"The TDC bus that was traveling from Abilene to El Paso went off on the icy overpass, when down an embankment, and a train that was going Eastbound -- obviously the bus hit the train," says Ector County Sheriff Mark Donaldson.
The National Transportation Safety Board is sending a team to aid in the investigation.
"It's with a heavy heart that we mourn the loss of those killed and injured this morning in a tragic accident. Their loved ones will be in our thoughts and prayers," said Brad Livingston, Executive Director of the TDCJ.
