PROSPER (CBSDFW.COM) - Collin County high school players who share a field with the Dallas Cowboys aren't the only ones about to get an up close lesson from the pros.
Next week a group of Prosper High School broadcast students will learn from the best when they sit down with Stephen Colbert and the Late Show team.
Producing a late night talk show that's funny isn't easy. The six seniors that put on the school's weekly show spent years in Prosper's broadcast program before tackling a project like this. That's why when their advisor told them he had an important message, they were worried.
"And we were all like, 'oh my God, we all just got canceled.' Like it's only like the second show," senior Landyn Cason remembered.
Cason, who prefers to stay behind the scenes in the control room, said the group soon learned instead of being canceled they were going to New York.
"We have Stephen Colbert. I was like, 'yes, like come on,' " Cason said.
The school's broadcast advisor said he wanted to try a late night format show, but didn't think they could pull it off. That is... until he found the right student to host.
"I love doing this. It's what I want to do when I'm older," the show's host, Brady Powers said.
Stephen Colbert's team thought the show was funny and goofy enough to invite them to New York after watching some of the work on Youtube. The students will spend a day shadowing Colbert and his writers looking for inside tips on how to improve.
"Whenever we're going, it's like you're not feeling it. Like how do I make you feel like this is about to be the best show of your life, like this is about to change the world. I want to learn that," Cason said.
The school said the shows produced by the broadcast program generate ad money that will pay for much of the trip. The students fly out this weekend to meet with Colbert Monday.
