NEW YORK (CBS NEWS) - Stocks plunged Monday after the opening bell, following the lead set by overseas markets as an intensifying rout persisted in all but assets viewed as safe havens.
As of 9:57 a.m. ET, the Dow was down 537 points, or 3.3 percent, to 15,922. The index had dropped more than 1,000 points moments after the market opened. The S&P fell 62 points, or 3.2 percent, to 1,909. And the Nasdaq dropped 180 points, or 3.8 percent, to 4,526 points.
On Friday, the Dow declined into correction mode as investors voiced worries that the U.S. economy is not strong enough to block events overseas, with China's slowdown of particular concern.
