FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - Police in Fort Worth are investigating a shooting early Wednesday involving one of their own officers. It happened at around 2:15 a.m. in the 200 block of North Retta Street, just off of Airport Freeway near Riverside Drive, to the northeast of downtown.

Officials indicated that this started as a fight between two men at a home. Authorities were called after a report of shots being fired. Two officers arrived at the scene to find the two suspects in a gunfight outside.

When the officers exited from their patrol car, one of those armed suspects turned his gun toward police. At least one of the officers then fired shots at the man. That suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

The other suspect was taken to JPS Hospital in Fort Worth with a gunshot wound to his hand. Authorities think that he was injured during the initial gun battle, and not by the officers. The names of the suspects have not been released.

Authorities later confirmed that the gunfight started as a home invasion incident. The man who was shot and killed was the one who did not live at the scene.

No officers were hurt during this incident. The case is now under investigation. Officials have not released the names of the officers involved in the shooting, only saying that the both had been with the force for at least four years.
