ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) - Law enforcement officials in Arlington are investigating the death of a 17-year-old boy who was apparently shot and killed by his 16-year-old best friend. The incident happened just after midnight, early on Thursday.

Police officers and paramedics were called to a home along Golden View Court. When they arrived, the teen was found dead inside from a gunshot wound. Authorities believe that the two friends were playing with the gun when it somehow accidentally discharged.

The victim did not live at the home, but frequently spent time there with his friend, police said. The 16-year-old suspect was taken in for questioning, but official do believe that the shooting was an accident.

An elderly couple owns the home, and was also inside at the time of the shooting, according to police. Neighbors stated that they have a large extended family that often came by to visit. Those neighbors also said that police have visited this home before.

"It's scary, very scary," said neighbor Gene Taylor. "Shouldn't have access to a gun anyways."

Investigators are working to get additional details, but noted that everyone is distraught over the teenager's death. His father arrived at the scene later Thursday morning in tears, not wishing to comment on the situation before speaking to the authorities.

Police do not anticipate filing any charges in this case, but the investigation is still ongoing. A number of evidence bags were removed from the home on Thursday morning, and officers went door-to-door talking to neighbors. The names of the teenagers have not been released.
