One Dead, Standoff Ends With Arlington Shooting Suspect
ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM/AP) -- A man suspected of opening fire in an Arlington apartment complex, wounding one person fatally, has surrendered to police after a 7½-hour standoff.
The man has been identified as 32-year-old Joel Jonas White. Arlington police Lt. Christopher Cook says White surrendered about 1:30 p.m. Monday.
Authorities negotiated with White via cellphone, who police believed had access to "multiple weapons," possibly a rifle.
Police initially responded to a shots fired call around 6 a.m. at the apartment complex in the 1100 block of Silverwood Drive at Avenue J.
"You could hear people arguing," said Omar Richards, who lives near the apartment. "You could hear a verbal conversation then you heard another round of 5, 6, 7 shots."
Upon arrival, the suspect fired shots at police, who surrounded the complex.
Officers helped evacuate 25 residents -- including children -- from nearby apartments. Residents of neighboring buildings were urged to remain indoors through loud speakers and phone calls. Arlington Police deployed their unmanned helicopter equipped with a video camera to get a better look at the scene. The suspect was seen going in and out of the apartment unit several times during the standoff, according to police.
A Grand Prairie SWAT team also responded to assist at the scene.
Apolonia Morones lives right next door to where White was firing at officers.
"It was that close!" says the mother of three. "That close."
Morones heard six shots from inside the apartment and then silence.
"When the gunshot(s) stopped, I looked out the window and saw the body on the floor laying there," says Morones, who grabbed her children and hid. "I got my three kids and went to the closet with them."
Alice Butler was terrified too. She found a bullet in her living room and was trapped inside her apartment for almost eight hours.
"The suspect fired at police and they returned fire, so I got on the floor," says Butler. "I was like, oh my God! It's a bullet! I'm thankful that I didn't get hit. I just praise God that I'm still alive."
White has been charged with Murder and is being held on $250,000 bail at the Arlington City Jail.
The name of the victim has not been released, pending next of kin notification.
