Arlington Police Fatally Shoot Driver Trying To Flee Traffic Stop

ARLINGTON, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) - An Arlington police officer shot and killed a driver who was trying to flee a traffic stop Saturday afternoon.

Police say an officer stopped a vehicle in the 2800 block of Bowen at around 1:45 p.m. for a registration violation. The officer smelled marijuana in the vehicle and called for backup

According to police, a backup officer arrived and was talking to two men inside the vehicle while it was off while the responding officer was in her car.

While the backup officer was on the passenger side of the vehicle, the driver began rolling up the windows and started the vehicle back up. The officer reached inside the passenger-side window and gave verbal commands to try and stop the vehicle from driving off.

The vehicle then started moving forward while the officer was still on the passenger side with his arm inside the window.

Police say the officer fired his weapon before he fell from the vehicle. The driver was struck by the gunfire and was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. The passenger was detained at the scene but later released.

The officer involved is okay, according to police.

Police have not said how many shots were fired. It is still unknown if narcotics were found inside the vehicle.
