ARLINGTON (CBSDFW) - A call for change is being made after police have a close call that could have turned deadly.

An Arlington Police officer almost used deadly force against a man who approached him with a pellet gun.

It's led to a movement by the police department to regulate the design of pellet or air soft guns which are becoming strikingly similar to the real thing.

Arlington Police want state lawmakers to put restrictions on sales to children and change the look of pellet guns before someone gets hurt.

"At the first of the year we saw an increase in robberies and specifically increase with robberies involving what we can call replica guns or airsoft pellet guns," says Lt. Chris Cook, Arlington Police Department.

Arlington Police also want to stiffen the penalties for people to use pellet guns to commit crimes
