Arlington Officials Not Happy About Red Light Ticket Budget Hole

ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM/AP) — According to Arlington city officials, money from red light runners caught by cameras had been spent on traffic safety programs and other patrol-related units.
In addition to Arlington submitting a 90-day contract termination notice to the traffic solutions company that managed their red light camera system, the city trimmed 23 Arlington Police Department positions. Even still, the May 9th vote left a projected $2.17 million revenue hole for the next fiscal year.
In some studies, red light cameras have been slated to be more of a hindrance than a help. In a report from the National Motorists Association on a culmination of red light camera studies from around the country, it illustrates that "ticket cameras typically increase, not decrease, the number of accidents at controlled intersections."
