Arlington Man Who Burned Girlfriend Sentenced To Life
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW/AP) - A 23-year-old Arlington man has been sentenced to life in prison for lighting his longtime girlfriend on fire.
A Tarrant County jury sentenced Antonio Hales Jr. Tuesday after convicting him last week of attempted capital murder.
Prosecutors said Hales was on probation for drug convictions when he got into a fight with his girlfriend outside his drug supplier's apartment. He doused her with gasoline inside their car, choked her and tossed a match in the vehicle lighting both her and the car on fire. She suffered burns on 40 percent of her body.
The Tarrant County District Attorney's office said that at trial, jurors heard of a long history of domestic abuse prior to the final confrontation.
The girlfriend spent nearly a month at the Parkland Hospital burn unit and several more months at Zale Lipshy University Hospital in Dallas. She has undergone numerous surgeries and will continue to need medical care throughout life to cope with the scar tissue caused by her burns.
