Arlington Man Sentenced To 40 Years For Killing Ex-Girlfriend
ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) - An Arlington man who stabbed his ex-girlfriend to death and then went home and watched football with his friends was sentenced to 40 years in prison Monday morning.
Larry Fikes – who was scheduled to go to trial this week – reached a plea bargain agreement and plead guilty to murder in the slaying of Angela Bynum. In exchange for his guilty plea, prosecutors Rhett Parham and Sean Colston agreed to the 40-year prison sentence. Fikes, 39, must serve 20 years before he is eligible for parole.
In the early morning hours of January 13, 2013, Bynum's co-workers went to her residence at The Clairborne Aparments after she failed to show up for her shift at the Arlington pub where she worked. They found the apartment door unlocked and Bynum dead inside. She had suffered multiple stab wounds. Bynum's 13-month-old son was also missing.
The following day, police located Bynum and Fike's son (they were involved for 6 years) at his home. Several days later, the investigation revealed that Fikes went to Bynum's apartment on the morning of January 12, 2013, to drop off their son as scheduled. While inside, Fikes stabbed Bynum at least nine times and then left with their son.
Afterward, he drove home and invited friends over to watch football.
Bynum's son was unharmed and his maternal grandmother is raising him.
"It was almost a year ago to the day that Angie was brutally murdered in front of her infant son," said Prosecutor Rhett Parham. "Hopefully this sentence brings her family closure and a chance to move forward with the knowledge that her killer will spend the greater part of the rest of his life behind bars."
