ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM/1080 KRLD) - Thanks to quick action by some Arlington firefighters, a lucky dog is recovering from an ordeal inside a burning home.

A 3-year-old German Shepherd named Zurreck was trapped inside a burning home on Sunday when firefighters pulled him out.

According to Arlington Fire officials, fireman Frank Berber and other firefighters gave him oxygen through a PetO2 mask, and they did something that not only had they never done before - but had never been trained to do on an animal, they started an IV on the dog.

Thanks to their quick thinking, Zurreck was alert and breathing when he arrived at the animal hospital. Berber says he was simply doing his job.

"Obviously it makes you feel good to make a difference," said Berber. "But we try to do that anytime we are called out."

Zurreck had suffered from smoke inhalation and has been undergoing hyperbaric treatment.

Veterinary staffers say he could be released today.
