ANNA (CBSDFW.COM) -Anna High School is located on the outskirts of town, and the school district doesn't want it to be vulnerable if an active shooter walked through the doors.

The district is considering a proposed defender program, which would arm select teachers.

Those teachers would be required to obtain a concealed handgun license, undergo regular training and pass a psychological exam.

The Anna police department would oversee the training.
Anna may be a small Collin County town, but it has a big high school that the district's superintendent believes needs more protection.

Tonight, he laid out a proposal to arm veteran teachers with a concealed handgun license who volunteer, provide their own weapon and undergo extensive gun training as well as a psychological exam.

"I'm for it because you don't see a lot of school violence where people will protect themselves," says Chase Binion.

Chase Binion supports the idea, but like other parents of students, believes the firearms need to be in the hands of the right people.

"They need to make sure to have a mental evaluation done there are some people that seem fine but then lose it one day," says Elias Ashley.

But the police chief over Dallas public schools, who developed a marshal training model for classrooms across the state, worries that Anna and other districts are going with riskier, less expensive options.

Anna would be the first Collin County school district to implement the school marshal law, which the state passed a few years ago.
