COLLIN COUNTY (CBSDFW.COM) - As we head into the last weekend of Christmas shopping, CBS11 has a gift idea for you. The Collin County Animal Services are hoping holiday shoppers will stop by and adopt an animal from their shelter that's overflowing with dogs and cats who need homes.

They call it Code Red. Collin County's animal shelter has reached its limits on how many adoptable animals they can hold. They've even had to set up these temporary crates in the hallways.

"So sometimes when we get that full, you know we do have to make hard decisions," shelter volunteer Danielle Jones said.

Fortunately the dog they've had the longest, a 2-year-old pit bull mix named Feta has finally found a home with 5-year-old Camille Ogburn and her family.

"Because she's sweet," Camille said.

"It's really my present because I've been wanting a dog. I love dogs, so I say it's for them, but it's for me too," Camille's mom, Rachel added.

Misty Broome brought her 5-year-old son Truett to do some last minute shopping. The shelter has about 50 available dogs, who make inexpensive $25 gifts. Cats are only $10.

"You can go buy a pet anywhere, but these dogs need homes, and what better gift for them than to have a home at Christmas too," Broome said.

As for Feta it isn't just the dog and her family who will be feeling the holiday cheer. The volunteers who have cared for Feta these past several months say in this case it's even better to give than to receive.

"It's a very big Christmas present for a lot of us here. We're excited to see her be home for Christmas. In time for Christmas, in time for the holidays, and to finally have a family of her own," Jones said.
