An 'Ominous' Surgery For Cowboys TE James Hanna?

OXNARD (105.3 THE FAN) - We've been down this Cowboys road before in this space… and the words "bone bruise" can sound ominous.

That's the description given to the injury of Cowboys tight end James Hanna, who is now scheduled to undergo what some might call "minor knee surgery."

But this procedure could keep him out of the team's season opener Sept. 11 against the Giants, could mean the valued blocker and Jason Witten backup starts the season on PUP (meaning he'd miss the first six games of the season), and could in theory lead to mean future trouble.

Not to be an alarmist here, but a "bone bruise" to the knee isn't always just a bruise. It is often a tiny fracture that, as in the case of Dallas' Anthony Spencer a few years ago, can ultimately result in microfracture surgery...which of course can be career-altering.

We reported all this when it was happening to Spencer, amid the protests of many ... But Spencer himself never disagreed with our reports because he knew the realities. (At 32, the one-time Pro Bowler is now out of the NFL.)

Hanna, hopefully, isn't facing the same unfortunate realities.
