An Aggie's Rejoice
In 1978, I was born into a Texas A&M family. At that time, my 18 year-old father was attending A&M while my mother and I stayed in the Pepper Tree Apartments just off campus. Since then I've been an Aggie.
From my first Cotton Bowl in 1986 where I watched Bo Jackson run circles around The Wrecking Crew, to 1992 when my Aggies went undefeated until losing to Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl, to 1998 when I began attending Texas A&M, and until now, when MY Texas A&M Aggies went to Alabama and shocked the college football world, beating the #1 Crimson Tide in their place 29-24.
I've cheered for MY Aggie greats; Dante Hall, Sam Adams, Bucky Richardson, Dat Nguyen, Von Miller but now the country is cheering for MY quarterback, Johnny Manziel.
"Johnny Football" is doing something NO OTHER quarterback has been able to do in a LONG time - break the barrier of comparing white QBs to white QBs and black QBs to black QBs. Manziel has poise, speed, agility and, being a redshirt freshman, the best is yet to come...which is great news for Aggies like me.
I've suffered through the best of times and the worst of times all while sawing varsity's horns off, humping, whooping and standing with 82,000 Aggies at Kyle Field.
However, no moment was a great as what I experienced on this night with my 6 year-old son by my side in the living room of our Rockwall home.
I may not live in those Pepper Tree Apartments anymore, but the family legacy continues today. Thanks Johnny.
