AMR Maintenance Facility Staying Open Longer
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - Friday should have been the end of the line for AMR's maintenance facility located at Alliance Airport in Fort Worth. However, CBS 11 News has learned that the embattled company is not quite ready to say goodbye to the plant just yet. The facility will not be shutting down Friday as planned.
The mechanics at the Fort Worth facility work on American Airlines planes -- making fixes to jet parts like the engines, floorboards, ovens and seats. Earlier this year, AMR announced plans to cut 13,000 workers across the country and close the Alliance Airport maintenance facility.
Nearly 2,000 people work at the Fort Worth plant. According to American Airlines spokesperson Andrea Huguely, about 73 percent of those people were able to find other positions within the company. About 230 workers opted to leave voluntarily. Some employees will remain at the Fort Worth plant until its closure, now set for sometime in the middle of 2013.
News of staff reductions has been tough for employees, leading to uncertainty about their jobs. Workers have been reporting in, not knowing if they would be coming back the next day. Pieces of equipment have been packed up for the plant's closing. AMR has been providing career counseling and other resources and employees during this time.
