Ammonia Leak Evacuates Pepsi Plant In Mesquite

MESQUITE (CBSDFW.COM) - An ammonia leak forced the evacuation of about 40 people at a Pepsi bottling plant in Mesquite. The incident happened at around 1:30 a.m. early Wednesday morning.

The plant is located along Interstate-30, near Big Town Boulevard.

According to officials, the leak was found in the plant's system by electronic sensors. Those sensors alerted the workers of the situation and emergency crews -- including hazardous materials units -- quickly responded to the scene.

"It's a respiratory issue. It really affects the respiratory system," explained Capt. Kelly Turner with the Mesquite Police Department. "It can cause you to have a really bad day if you get a good whiff of it, so, any time we've got an ammonia leak, we want to make sure we pay an abundance of attention ot what's going on out here."

There were no injuries reported. The evacuated workers were slowly released and allowed to go home for rest.

Pepsi would not disclose how the ammonia is used in their bottling system, or how much ammonia was leaked. Police would only say that it was not a small release. The leak has since been contained.
