American Airlines Wants To Add Brazil Flights

FORT WORTH (AP) - American Airlines, which is operating under bankruptcy protection, is seeking permission to add more flights to Brazil.

American said Wednesday that it's filed an application with the U.S. Department of Transportation for the right to fly 17 more weekly flights between the U.S. and Brazil.

Fort Worth-based American currently runs more than 80 weekly flights to Brazil.

Chief Commercial Officer Virasb Vahidi says Brazil is a growing market for American, with the company hoping to start running expanded service as early as Oct. 1.

If approved, American said it would add flights from its Miami and New York-JFK hubs to various Brazilian cities.

American's parent company, AMR Corp., filed for Chapter 11 reorganization last November.
