American Airlines Says Broken Seat Issue Resolved
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - After inspecting 48 Boeing 757 aircraft for seats that could potentially loosen during flight, American Airlines says all of the planes are back in service and all necessary repairs have been made.
Fort Worth-based American Airlines says passenger seats came loose on three different flights since the weekend.
A spokesperson for the airline said in a written statement, "We believe a contributing factor is with the seat tracking and locking mechanism, not with where the work was performed."
Gary Peterson, President of the Transport Workers Union suggested on Tuesday that the issue may be a result of outsourcing.
"We've been doing these seats forever, and we haven't had problems with them done in house, so it's definitely a question of what's being done in the outsourced facility."
However, American continues to insist that neither contractors, nor airline employees, are to blame for the issue.
"While American Airlines employees and third-party contractors have worked on the 757 aircraft involved, we have the utmost confidence in our highly skilled maintenance and engineering teams as well our contract maintenance providers."
American says it will continue to work with the Federal Aviation Authority over the next few weeks, as it investigates these incidents.
