American Airlines Pilots Cite Progress In Talks

FORT WORTH (AP) - The pilots' union at Fort Worth-based American Airlines says it's made progress in contract talks with the company and agreed to meet again next week.

The union faces a June 22 deadline to agree on cost-cutting measures or risk having a federal bankruptcy judge impose American's terms. That could mean layoffs for about 12,000 employees, including 400 pilots.

American and parent AMR Corp. filed for bankruptcy protection in November.

The Allied Pilots Association said talks mediated by a different federal judge ran from Monday through Thursday and progress was made in some areas. Talks resume next Wednesday in New York.

Talks between American and its flight attendants' union broke down with no agreement. Negotiations with mechanics are pending.
