Child Safe After Tyler Amber Alert
TYLER (CBSDFW.COM) - The man accused of shooting and killing his ex-wife before fleeing with their 4-year-old son was arrested in Louisiana late Wednesday after a chase with police. The boy was not hurt.
James W. Calvert, 41, was taken into custody by police in West Monroe around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday night. According to CBS station KYTX in Tyler, police spotted Calvert's silver Buick LeSabre and, after they tried to pull the car over, Calvert led them on a chase. The chase ended when Calvert crashed on a dead end street. Police said that Calvert would not exit the car and that officers had to break the window to get him out.
Investigators said that there was a gun in the front seat and another in the back seat. Calvert's son, Lucas, was in a child safety seat in the back seat and did not get hurt.
The Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services has custody of Lucas and James Calvert is in the custody of the West Monroe Police Department. Both will be brought back to Tyler.
Police in Tyler issued an Amber Alert for the 4-year-old boy after officers found his mother shot and killed.
The Tyler Morning Telegraph reported that another child of the slain woman was at school and is safe. The woman's pastor, Larry Craig of Southern Oaks Baptist Church, told the newspaper that the woman and Calvert had recently gone through a child custody case in which she was awarded custody.
