Jessica Smith Returned Home To North Texas
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - After a week away from her friends and family, 11-year-old Jessica Smith is back in North Texas.
Fort Worth Police say Smith was returned to the custody of her family Monday night.
The Fort Worth girl was found with her mother Sunday afternoon in New Mexico.
Police are still trying to determine what drove Kimberly Smith to abduct her daughter in the first place.
On Tuesday, Fort Worth Police released Smith's arrest warrant. It says on February 6 a relative broke into a room in the Smith home after hearing a struggle between Jessica and Kimberly.
The report says Kimberly had tried to lock Jessica in a closet after gagging her mouth with a rag. The relative told police after Jessica broke free, Kimberly held her on the bed because she was 'just loving on' Jessica.
The warrant also says Kimberly had a knife and told Jessica that she was going to kill her and then herself.
The warrant says the relative did not report the incident to police because they felt "the incident was over."
But on February 7, the relative woke up to find Jessica and Kimberly gone from the house.
Later that day, after school officials notified police, the Amber Alert was issued.
Kimberly Smith was released from the Santa Fe County Detention Center Monday night into New Mexico State Police custody. She was initially arrested on an FBI warrant of being a fugitive of the law. Police have not stated when an extradition hearing was or will be scheduled.
