Amber Alert Cancelled, 11 Year Old Found Safe Near Houston

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) -The 11-year old girl who was the focus of an Amber Alert issued in North Texas, has been found safe in Trinity County, which is near the Houston area.

Police had said Savannah Hurley was abducted by her mother, Shelley Hurley, Monday afternoon, as a Child Protective Services worker tried to take the girl from the mother's custody.

Law enforcement was concerned that the pair were headed to the Dallas or Garland area.

At first, police were looking for a 2006 white Ford F-150 with Texas plates - 5-8-N-Z-M-4.

However, when that vehicle was found abandoned in Trinity County, police released an alert for a second vehicle, a maroon 1996 Subaru Legacy station wagon, with Alabama plates - 48738AZ.

It was found in Mesquite when an alert neighbor noticed it during his morning walk.

"Well, it was a little bit out of place," Guy Chamberlain told CBS 11 News, "it was loaded up to the eyeballs and backpacks on the roof; it was full of stuff. And I just checked the car out, checked the license and just kept on going." When he saw a story about the Amber Alert, he contacted Mesquite Police.

Investigators questioned everyone in the home, including Abby Brown, who said it was all a big mistake.

"The guy that was at our house was a friend, and he was down by Houston helping a friend and he happened to be there at the wrong time at the wrong place."

According to Brown the car's owner had seen the missing girl and her mother Monday but was unaware of the Amber Alert.

"They left and then he left and he woke up this morning freaking out and saying they were looking for his car and we told him to call police to let them know his car had nothing to do with it he was jusa there. After an hour after that the police showed up and took us to the station and looked around the house."

Police say Shelley Hurley's boyfriend owns that vehicle. He has been arrested on an unrelated probation violation. Brown and her roommate were released.
