Alzheimer Workshop Helps To Educate Those Struggling With Affected Loved Ones
GARLAND, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) - Last year the search for a missing Garland man with dementia gained widespread attention. Now the wife of the missing man is hoping to help others who are struggling with affected loved ones.
Ann Ticknor is speaking out to help others never face her pain. Her husband, 82-year-old Hal Ticknor drove away from their Garland home last fall.
Hal had dementia but usually did not drive to unfamiliar places on his own.
Police along with fellow church members searched for the missing man for seven weeks. In late November, they got the disturbing news that some hunters found his body in Seymour, Texas.
Ann says she never could have imagined this scenario. She says there are so many things people need to be aware about with this disease.
Garland Alzheimer Workshop
Every 67 seconds someone in the United States develops Alzheimer's. It's the sixth leading cause of death in the United States.
On Saturday, Ann Ticknor along with Garland Police Officer Joe Harn, The Alzheimer's Committee of Dallas and estate planning attorney Richard Johnson will host a free workshop to educate anyone on how to deal with Dementia and Alzheimer's.
It will free and open to the public from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Garland at 801 W. Avenue B & Glenbrook.
Some of the topics include: financial planning, volunteer search efforts, and how Silver Alert's work.
