Albertsons Closing More North Texas Stores

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Grocery store chain Albertsons will be closing five more North Texas stores soon.

"Over the last several years we've taken steps to have these stores compete in the marketplace, but unfortunately we were unable to do so," Spokeswoman Christine Wilcox told NewsRadio 1080 KRLD.

Going away are the Albertsons at Hebron and old Denton in Carrollton, at Highway 78 and Crist in Garland, Plano and Beltine in Richardson, Park and Shiloh in Plano and Southlake and Davis in Southlake.

Wilcox says the stores were simply losing money. "When a neighborhood changes from more residential to commercial, that can be a factor. So can the economy."

The stores will hold liquidation sales starting Wednesday, January 19. Wilcox anticipates the sales will run through mid February.

The stores employ 550 workers. Wilcox says she's hopeful many of those employees will be transferred to other stores.

North Texas is considered to be one of the most competitive grocery store markets in the country.  Over the past few years Albertsons has closed or redeveloped nearly 20 stores across the area.  Last January the chain closed down three north Texas stores - in Frisco, Allen and Arlington
