Afghanistan Diary: Footchase Through The Market
CBS 11 anchor Keith Garvin and photojournalist Edgar Solis are traveling to Afghanistan to see the U.S. war effort firsthand. In February they will bring back a series of stories about our troops there. While they are traveling, Keith is writing this blog for CBSDFW.COM.
BAGRAM AIR BASE, AFGHANISTAN - Wednesday, January 25:
Another day of interviews, video and hard work in the can! Edgar and I started our day interviewing Lt. Col. Chad Carroll, Public Affairs Director for RC-E/1st Cavalry Division. He talked to us about 1st Cav's mission here in Afghanistan: the goals, the progress and the challenges. He's also a proud native of North Texas, raised in Cleburne. When Lt. Col Carroll stepped off the plane at Bagram Airfield last May to begin his deployment, he was told that U.S. Special Operations forces had just killed Osama Bin Laden. In February, find out how he characterizes that major moment in America's fight against terrorism.
We also had the pleasure of interviewing a father and son who are deployed together here in Afghanistan. Command Sergeant Major Earl Allen Sr. has been in the army for 25 years. Specialist Earl Allen Jr. has two years under his belt, following in his father's footsteps in name, service and even occupational specialty. To hear how proud these two are of each other will definitely touch your heart. But what does mom think about having her husband AND son deployed to a combat zone?
To end our day, we got to hang out for a second day in a row with the 164th Military Police Company. We were able to accompany them on a routine mission through the village of Charikar. Things got interesting when the soldiers spotted a local man wearing an American-issued Army Combat Uniform. That's a no-no for Afghans. When one of the soldiers dismounted from the MRAP armored vehicle the man took off running. Several more soldiers dismounted and a chase through the market ensued. What happened next?
