Affidavit Links Evidence In Wise County Shootout & Colorado Murder
DECATUR (CBS 11 NEWS) - Court documents obtained by CBS11 reveal shell casings found at a Colorado murder scene are the same brand and caliber found after a shoot out in Wise County.
Authorities began an investigation into the suspect, Evan Ebel, who was pulled over by Montague County Sheriff's Deputy James Boyd Thursday afternoon. When Boyd approached the vehicle, Ebel shot him twice in the chest and another bullet grazed the deputy's forehead.
"It took him a few minutes to regain consciousness," said Paul Cunningham, Sheriff of Montague County.
Boyd was able to get on his portable radio and call for help. He also gave a good description of the suspect and the direction he was headed.
When officers gave chase, Ebel fired several rounds at officers. Ebel shot in the head and later died at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth.
Ebel was a suspect in the murder of a Colorado pizza delivery man and the head of the Corrections Department in Colorado, Tom Clements.
A search warrant affidavit revealed Hornady 9mm shell casings were recovered at the Clements murder scene. Casings of the same brand and caliber were also found at the scene of the shoot out in Wise County.
The affidavit also revealed a Domino's Pizza carrier and a Domino's shirt or jacket was found in the suspect vehicle's open trunk.
Investigators have finished processing the suspect's 1991 black Cadillac Deville for forensic evidence and several Colorado investigators have returned home, some taking evidence from Texas with them.
Ebel has an extensive criminal record. He has also been known to be a member of a white supremacist group.
His mother, Jody Mangue, who has posted extensive blogs about her son online, wrote about Ebel's involvement in behavioral programs since he was 12 years old. She also wrote that he spent 23 hours a day in solitary confinement for several years of his imprisonment.
Investigators are also asking witnesses who saw anything during Thursday's shoot out to come forward to police.
Montague County Deputy Boyd is expected to fully recover. He has been an deputy with the department since 2009.
A team of Colorado investigators is in Wise County, helping with the investigation.
Authorities are also looking into whether there is connection between these crimes and the murder of Kaufman County District Attorney Mark Hasse, who was shot steps away from the Kaufman County Courthouse.
