Admitted Meth User Dies In Fort Worth Police Custody

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) -- A man arrested for public intoxication early Friday morning has died in police custody in Fort Worth.

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner reports that Tony Durham, 35, died at Fort Worth Police headquarters.

Durham was initially arrested around 8 p.m. Thursday on public intoxication charges and transported to the City of Fort Worth jail facility. He was released at 9:30 p.m. after a customary detention period.

Shortly after his release, he was observed attempting to enter vehicles along 300 N. Taylor Street. The responding officer completed a field investigation and arrested Durham again for public intoxication.

Officers at the scene say Durham had dilated pupils and was sweating profusely, despite an outside temperature of 77 degrees.

Durham told officers he didn't know where he was or how he got there, and later admitted to smoking methamphetamine.

Durham was processed into the jail and placed in a holding cell, where he was later found "motionless and unresponsive" by jail personnel.

He was transported to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Medical Examiner has not yet determined the cause or manner of death.
