Accident At Bush House Caused By Stuck Accelerator
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - It was all a freak accident at one of the most heavily guarded places in North Texas.
The driver of a 1970 Mercury Cougar wrecked his car Wednesday night in Dallas. A sad story for the restored car, but it made headlines nationally because of where the wreck happened, right in the front yard of former President George W. Bush.
The Secret Service says the wreck never posed a threat against former President Bush and former First Lady Laura Bush, who were at their Preston Hollow home.
The driver, Steve Greenberg, told police as he was driving down the street to visit a friend who lives next door to the Bushes, his car suddenly sped off. While he slammed on the brakes, the car ran up the curb and slammed into a tree on the Bush's property.
"According to him, his accelerator got stuck. One of our officers on the scene says he did witness a wire coming from under the dash near the accelerator which probably could have contributed to it," says Dallas Police Spokesman Warren Mitchell.
Police called an ambulance, but Greenberg wasn't hurt.
A retired Secret Service agent says the agents stationed at the Bushes' house are trained to respond to situations like last night, and based on their training they responded correctly.
A situation not lost on some of the neighbors. "You take a car straight to a former President's house, you're liable to catch a bullet. Everyone was unscathed except a nice muscle car" says resident Chad Gross.
Greenberg passed all sobriety tests and will not be charged.
