A Texas Sized CHL Class
KENNEDALE (CBSDFW.COM) - It's being called the largest Concealed Handgun Class - ever. More than 700 educators showed up for the free CHL class Saturday at Kennedale High School.
Organizers say the inspiration for it came from the late Chris Kyle. Kyle was on board in January. The school shootings in Newtown, Connecticut were on his mind.
Kyle was killed in February. But those close to him stood in his honor.
His widow, Taya Kyle, said, "I think he'd be excited about it. I think he'd be happy."
If only he could see it now. Kyle's brother, Jeff, who served two tours in Iraq, was also there to speak to the crowd.
Taya Kyle spoke on her husband's behalf.
"I think he'd be excited about the possibility of having more people stepping up to the plate. And the fact that people care enough to take accountability and responsibility for the people around them."
Kyle, known as "The Most Lethal Sniper" in U-S military history was killed in February at a firing range in Erath County.
Dalworthington Gardens DPS Chief, Bill Waybourn, says Kyle was an inspiration.
"The idea of doing a free teacher CHL is Chris Kyle. Remember his montro is taht it's our duty to serve those that serve us," the Chief said.
CBS 11 first told you Dalworthington Gardens Police hired Kyle as an officer shortly before his death.
Kyle wanted to be on the streets helping to train officers to use firearms.
Hundreds of educators, from as far away as Austin, took the free offer today to learn about concealed handguns.
Mary Coria, from Arlington ISD, said, "I just couldn't pass up the opportunity to honor Chris Kyle. It's something we want for
our family anyways, to be able to protect ourselves."
Lindy Buchanan, from Terrell ISD, said, "I wanted to get my CHL for personal and home protection. It's very important to have."
"I know there's been a a lot of fear in schools over guns and what guns are. So we thought you know what we'll take this opportunity to do some education. We're not pushing policy," said Chief Waybourn.
Chief Waybourn also said taking the CHL class is a great way to find out if you should not be carrying a concealed handgun.
